Orwell launches Care Academy

 

Shared Owner? Don't be left out
in the cold this winter!

Orwell has always supported apprenticeship opportunities in many areas of the business and where possible offered permanent jobs to those achieving their qualification.

To build on this ethos Orwell has launched their very own Care Academy specifically to encourage young people into the care and support sector. This will be achieved by providing a supportive development pathway to those already working in the sector. 

The first intake for the Care Academy includes team leaders, home carers, support workers and apprentice support workers. Supported by Orwell, they will all be working towards qualifications to develop their careers.

If you are a shared owner it is your responsibility to organise and pay for your gas / air source / oil boiler to be serviced.

Orwell only organises the servicing of these types of boilers in our rented properties.

We would strongly advise you to organise a service for your boiler annually to ensure you stay warm in the winter.

Orwell Board Approves
Resident Group Recommendations

Orwell Housing Achieves "100% Good" in CQC Inspection

100% Good rating by the CQC

 

A group of residents recently took a report on a review they carried out to Orwell’s Board, and had the majority of their recommendations approved. They were also complimented on the quality of their work. This was the first group of residents to undertake a Task and Finish Group review for Orwell. The topic reviewed over a three month period was Orwell’s standard for letting a property.

From assessing documents, speaking to Orwell staff and shadowing property inspections, both before and after they had been made ready to re let, the group identified thirteen recommendations for changes. Ten of these were approved and will be put in place.

A new Task and Finish Group will start working on the next topic in January.

The Care Quality Commission (CQC) has found the quality of care provided by Orwell Housing Association to be 100% good following a recent inspection.

Under CQC’s programme of inspections, all adult social care services are being given a rating according to whether they are safe, effective, caring, responsive and well-led. Orwell’s CQC track record has always been high. However, to achieve 100% good across all the services is quite an achievement.

Orwell is currently the largest provider of extra care housing for older people in Suffolk.

Walls of Sunrise Park are Transformed

Children based on Orwell’s Whiting Road, in Oulton Broad, recently took part in an art project to decorate the walls of their new play area. They joined forces with artist ‘Stane’, also known as Carl Wright, to transform the walls of the new play area.

Stane ran art sessions to help the children come up with ideas and then use spray paint to create three large graffiti style boards. Everyone involved said it was great fun and something they would never normally get the chance to try. The boards have been fixed to the walls of the play area that the children named Sunrise Park.

The art sessions were funded through a grant from the East Suffolk Young People’s Action Group (ESYPAG) who gives funding to improve opportunities for young people in East Suffolk.

Meet the staff 

Orwell has staff carrying out wide and varied roles throughout the business; here is your chance to meet some of them.

In this newsletter we feature Gill Cornforth, a  Care Worker at Marjory Girling House (Extra Care Scheme) in Felixstowe, Suffolk.

Q.   What does your job entail?
A.   Anything from helping someone get their breakfast to operating  hoists and providing nursing needs. You need to be able to multitask, we have a rota for the day, but things always change making every day different, I love it. 

Q.   What gets you up in the morning?
A.   The need to pick up a colleague on the way to work!

Q.   What three words would you use to describe your role?   
A.   Caring, Consistent and Confidential

Q.   If you could change something about working here, what would it be?
A.   Get rid of the staff mobile phones. All calls go to all the staff mobiles which means they can be ringing constantly. Even if someone else answers so your phone stops ringing it can make the tenant feel uncomfortable, especially if you are providing personal care. You want to be able to give the resident all your attention when caring.

Q.   What is your guilty pleasure?
A.    A glass of wine, two glasses even better.

Q.   What advice would you give to recent new tenants? 
A.   Give it time; moving in to a scheme is a big life change. To new staff, don’t panic, there is always help at hand.
