National Apprenticeship Week: Celebrating skills for life

Darcy on National Apprenticeship Week

This National Apprenticeship Week, we’re celebrating the skills and growth our apprentices have achieved so far.

For those considering their next steps, an apprenticeship could be the ideal route. Apprenticeships offer a great opportunity to begin a successful and fulfilling career, combining hands‑on experience with structured learning. Unlike traditional paths such as college or university, apprenticeships let you build real-world skills from day one while continuing to develop professionally and personally.

Orwell Academy

Our very own Orwell Academy opens the door to a rewarding career by building your knowledge, confidence and practical experience. Our Future Leaders Programme maps clear career pathways providing targeted development to close skills gaps. Through our partner, WS Training, we offer ILM Levels 3 and 5 in Leadership and Management, ensuring our leaders have the skills to supervise, manage and develop their teams effectively. Our Care Academy supports people at every level of our extra‑care structure, guided by a strong mentoring and development framework.

Orwell offers a range of apprenticeships which are available to all eligible colleagues. Routinely enrolments are available on:

  • Level 2 Horticulture
  • Level 2 Adult Care Worker
  • Level 3 Leader in Adult Care
  • Level 3 Business Administrator
  • Level 3 Team Leader Supervisor
  • Level 4 Lead Practitioner in Adult Care
  • Level 5 Leader in Adult Care
  • Level 5 Operations and Department Manager

Jasmin, Learning and Development Advisor at Orwell explains the support available for anyone interested in undertaking an apprenticeship: “Support is available throughout the entire apprenticeship, including coaching, mentoring, general guidance, progress reviews, and help with any concerns. If learners have questions or face challenges, we encourage them to share these with the team so we can provide the right support for both delegates and their managers.”

A look at the skills our apprentices have developed so far

“One key skill I have learnt is about the different levels of listening. I knew about active listening, but I have now challenged myself where I sit on the four-step scale and felt that I am falling short as a good listener.” - Michelle, Director of People and Culture

Level 5 Professional Coaching Apprenticeship

“I’ve learned the value of stepping back to see the bigger picture. Breaking things down into clear, manageable pieces has helped me work through challenges more effectively. It’s a mindset I now apply to new projects. I am more likely to say yes or get involved more as I have learned key skills to tackle a variety of different situations, for example, problem solving.” – Karen, Home Ownership Manager

Level 5 Departmental and Operational Manager Apprenticeship

“My one standout lesson that this apprenticeship has taught me is to be yourself. Along with gaining people facing skills, confidence, problem solving and teamwork.” – Darcy, Business Administration Apprentice

Level 3 Business Administrator Apprenticeship

“One standout skill that I have gained so far is that how open-minded you need to be in every aspect when being a team leader.” – Liveta, Development Project Officer

Level 3 Team Leader Supervisor Apprenticeship
