Having an updated CV is crucial when job seeking. It is one of the first things an employer will see when you apply for a position and as we all know, first impressions matter. Ensuring your CV is clear and up to date with all your employment history and dates is imperative.
Tips when creating a CV
Creating a CV requires attention to detail. It is important to avoid any spelling mistakes as it could come across like it has been rushed.
- Make sure to include gaps of employment if you have any as the hiring manager will query about it if not already confirmed.
- Ensure your employment history is in chronological order to display a clear career history.
- Use clean designs and fonts so it is not hard to read or ‘pretty’ but not covering the correct information required.
- Proofread thoroughly and consider asking someone else to check it for you if possible, for a second opinion and suggested views.
- Use keywords and cater to the positions you are applying for without lying or overselling your abilities. Use phrases that match the job description requirements to improve your chances of being shortlisted for a conversation or interview with the panel. Knowing the role you wish to apply for will help you when writing a CV.
What to include in your CV:
- Contact information (Name, Number and Email Address for easy contact, Pronouns (Optional)).
- A summary of your experience, skills and aptitudes.
- Employment history, with dates of employment and role responsibilities. Keep it brief but clear and concise.
- Education history.
- Qualifications and accomplishments.
- Hobbies. Employers would like to get to know you too.
